Spring? Really? Yep that is what we said, Spring. Yes the calendar says fall but for us desert gardeners the feeling is more like spring in the cold country. We’ve been cooped up, our gardens have suffered, and it is time for rejuvenation and life-means Spring to us! Here is what you can or should be doing now!
Beginning the process of planting a winter lawn-Watch the video at right for the first step. We’ll post the next step next week!
Continue to plant winter vegetables, plants, seeds,….
Start planting cool season flowers: Geraniums, Mums, Petunias,Snaps,Lobelia…
Sew Sweet Pea seeds
Apply pre emergent herbicides to areas where no weeds or growth may be wanted this winter
Control existing weeds, spruge is still a problem as are others, don’t let them go to seed
Watch for pests, especially caterpillars (you may be trying to attract butterflies, so this isn’t for you!) We have had an amazing amount of caterpillar damage on plants that have never seen them before-Yellow and Orange Bells, Bougainvilleas..But remember the usual suspects like Texas Mt. Laurel and especially newly planted veggies and Geraniums. Use a number of safe controls like B.T. or Spinosad
Fertilize your lawn if you don’t intend to plant winter grass
Fertilize vegetable gardens if you’ve had them in for a month or so-keep them growing fast.
Groom and shape up roses and other summer damaged plants. A light pruning and some fertilizer will do wonders as the weather cools they’ll recover nicely
Spring, We mean Fall, is the best time to plant trees. They get a big head start on spring plantings
Think Pink This Month
October is our favorite month for a number of reasons, namely the cooling weather and great gardening activities. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness time! You’ve probably seen the sports teams wearing pink shoes, etc. Well at Harper’s we’re going pink as well. We’ll give 10% OFF on any plant that has a pink flower this month. We hope you’ll then donate it to your favorite Breast Cancer Charity or Cause!!
Remember to think Spring!! Yep that is correct, at least to us! If you need any assistance in redoing, planning, or just plain starting over in you lawn, landscape,or garden-give us a call. We can have one of our landscape experts come out and evaluate your entire property or any portion of it and turn it in to the garden of your dreams!!
