circa 1870 Washington Street , Phoenix Az Notice the large Trees!
Can you imagine a world without them? We don’t have to look far to see what that looks like, living here in the desert. Drive across southwest Arizona en route to San Diego and see the barren hill sides and sand dunes! They are majestic and beautiful in their own uniqueness, but because they are unique, not ever present!
We’ve been taught the many benefits of trees since our youth-create oxygen, shade, wildlife habitat….As i grow older trees take on another more personal meaning. I can remember the big Mesquite and Pecan tree that grew on our original nursery location in Phoenix and the many memories growing up there with my parents and grandparents. They pine tree that we forgot to take the Christmas lights out of and they became so high up in the tree they are still there as far as i know? The Elm I rescued from the nursery with a broken trunk that my kids played in and graces the whole back corner of my yard with shade and beauty! And all the living Christmas trees that we donated to Tonalea School that grew to become majestic pines!
Memories, yep if for no other reason plant a memory! You certainly need shade and your home will increase in value, and you’ll save money on your electric bill! But what a wonderful thing to remember as you look back on your legacy-who you sat under that Oak with, or the time your grandfather helped you fix your flat tire on your bike under the shade of the big old Palo Verde. Or who might remember you by the tree you helped them plant? Need any other reason? I don’t! Celebrate Arbor Day this weekend (the actual day is Friday April 26t in Arizona) by planting a tree, helping someone plant a tree, giving a tree away to someone who really needs it…The memories will be worth it!
