Sounds like what we have going on here now doesn’t it. Most of the country is forced into the “interruption” of winter by a big layer of the “white” stuff that lays on the ground. In our case a lot of it is self induced, but it is a bit hot out there in the middle of the day! A lot of folks take a breather from their gardening activities this time of year for a number of reasons but there are still many things that if left unattended can lead to problems down the road. So here is a short list of things that shouldn’t be neglected in the landscape now:
YOU MAY ACTUALLY WANT TO CUT BACK ON WATERING FREQUENCY WITH HIGHER HUMIDITY AND SOME OCCASIONAL RAINFALL-You’ll notice that things are staying moist a lot longer now due to high dew points, also it is best to water in early morning rather than night so that fungi and molds don’t grow as easily.
CHECK YOUNG TREES FOR PROPER STAKING: Be sure that you have removed the “grower” stake that is directly fixed to the trunk and replace with 2 stakes equidistant from the trunk and on either side. This allows for the tree to move and it will get stronger more quickly and the tree will be less likely to break in high winds.
THIN OUT DENSE CANOPIED TREES: If done properly this will allow wind to pass thru more easily and can reduce break downs during wind storms.
PROPERLY PLACE DRIP EMITTERS/WATERING: Few of us ever move and add emitters to trees as they grow. The proper place to water is out near the “drip line” or at least between the drip line and trunk. Most trees that blow over are the result of improper water or water placement not allowing the roots to anchor the tree properly. Roots can’t find water, they proliferate where water is present and abundant. If the only place there is moisture is close to the trunk that is where they will grow!
CONTROL WEEDS: If we do get rain or even with high humidity, we get weeds. You can prevent them by using preemergent herbicides or if the do appear, pull or eliminate while they are young. this is when sprurge is very prevalent and grows fast. Spurge is also full of seed and will spread if not pulled or disposed of properly. It almost demands a two prong approach of pre emergent and pulling or spraying existing plants while young. The best way to prevent weeds is a healthy lawn or ground cover like mulch in the garden- So 2 more things to do now: MULCH GARDENS AND FLOWER BEDS AND KEEP LAWNS AND GARDENS FERTILIZED AS THEY ARE GROWING VERY FAST NOW (Be sure to never mow more the 1/3 of the length of grass off when you mow-you may have to raise mowing heights a little now as well).

Ponderings News From Our Friends At The Pond Gnome!
When we met some of you, about a decade ago, the Aquascape™ Classic equipment that was installed in those water features was the best and easiest pond equipment to maintain. It was second to none in the industry. The last decade has had us completely immersed in the pond construction and maintenance trade, and Aquascape, Inc., the leader in backyard ponding, has created the Signature Pro™ series pond filtration equipment to make the ponding hobby easier for everyone.
So, what’s the difference between the original Classic models and the new Signature models? The skimmer net has been replaced with a rigid basket, making it more user-friendly, as the net tended to push out against the float valve when it was full of debris. The new Signature Pro equipment comes with stainless steel hardware to prevent electrolysis disintegration. The new Signature series is more durable, and the new shape eliminates bowing of the skimmer box from tree roots and ground shifting. We are so excited about these new and improved filters that we want to offering our pond clients a 10% discount on upgrading your water feature to the newest system.
