Since 1945-Harper’s Home Grown…It’s What We Do & Who We Are!
Exciting New Stuff Coming To Harper’s!!!
It May Be June But We’ve Got Big News!!!
Wow, we hope you’ll like what we’re up to the next few days here at Harper’s!! First of all starting today at our Scottsdale location,2529 N. Hayden Rd. you can get fresh picked locally grown sweet corn, melons, tomatoes and who knows what else as the days and weeks go by. Mark Freeman, a local farmer from Mesa has allowed us to share in selling some of his fresh home grown produce! Those of you familiar with Mesa will know his field at Center and Brown and the Scottsdale folks have driven by the large corn field between Pima rd. and the 101 just north of Indian School. We are picking up what Mark has to offer daily so it is fresh and delicious-one poor ear of corn didn’t even make it back to the store with me-it is even good cold!! Our Mesa location is selling our own vine ripened tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. So the Harper boys want you to grow all you can but if you don’t have enough, we’ve got it for you fresh daily!!!
Second, but certainly not in importance and really going along with our “farmer’s market” atmosphere in Scottsdale, We’re hosting an old fashioned Meet Your Neighbor Open House! This coming Wednesday June 13th from 6-9pm. Of course we’ll have the vegetable stand, plus-FREE refreshments, hot dogs, Live Music, booths, stuff for the kids, and more!! Come and meet your neighbors if you live in 85257 or 251 or anywhere near our Scottsdale location at Hayden and Thomas rds and have some old fashioned “block party” fun!!!

Early June Garden Checklist
Water and Check your Water Schedule and Water….learn how to water properly by picking up a FREE “watering by the numbers” guide at either Harper’s location!! It is only early June and we’ve had lots of folks with watering issues already!! Be sure your system is working properly: are heads missing or shooting into the street?,do you have leaks?,is your timer set to the right day and time…all things you must be on top of before you can even think about proper scheduling and time! come in, we can help!!
Fertilizing-It is time to fertilize citrus, and all of your fast growing trees, shrubs, and vines! Plants need to be fed when they are growing-they grow when it is warm-we don’t quite know how people came to think you shouldn’t feed when it is hot-that is when most plants need the most nutrients and when we are watering and leaching most of the nutrients out of the root zone of the plants!! It is important to never fertilize a dry plant and to use the proper amount of fertilizer-“follow directions” and water before and after fertilizing
Insect Patrol: We are still seeing aphids believe it or not, skeletonizers on grape plants are prolific, mites on all sorts of ornamentals and veggies, and I personally have caterpillars on my geraniums! Analyze the type of pest and the amount of damage being done. Perfect example is my geraniums-they aren’t going to live a lot longer, so i probably won’t treat them. Grape vines however are starting to produce grapes and they are getting close to harvest-treat if the damage is significant. Always make a proper diagnosis and again follow directions-We can help but please don’t ask us to do it over the phone-bring in samples so we don’t prescribe something that is incorrect or unnecessary!!
Cool your plants down by mulching!! Shredded bark applied a couple of inches thick around any plant is like putting a wet cloth on the back of your neck! It reduces heat stress, plus controls weeds and makes what weeds you do get a lot easier to pull!
This is the perfect time to eliminate or convert your grass lawn into a Xeriscape: Bermudagrasses are best killed when growing fast. If you are interested in a conversion or a new look for your landscape-Give us a call. We can send one of our Landscape Design Team out to do a FREE evaluation of your landscape and get you that resort style garden you’ve been dreaming of!
Don’t want to eliminate your grass, then be sure you’re fertilizing it every 30 days now with fertilome lawn food or 21-7-14 lawn food. Dethatch now if necessary and if you can aerate! Be sure your lawn is getting 2-4 inches of water per week for a great looking lawn and don’t let the lawn go too long between mowings. You shouldn’t remove more than 1/3 of the length of grass when you mow!
Plant warm season bedding flowers:vinca, moss rose, penta, anglonia, golden fleece, ornamental sweet potato and vegetables like: black eyed peas, Armenian cucumbers, bush beans and melons!
Got shade? going to be getting the first big electric bill of the year pretty quick- a nice shade tree can cut that by 20%!!
