There are a number of things or signs that point to the beginning of Spring. Wednesday was the beginning of lent, Pitchers and Catchers have reported for spring training, college basketball’s March Madness is just around the corner…Perhaps you have other things that remind you, a certain smell or event? In any case here in the desert Spring has arrived-Now What!!
- Time to prune back sub tropical plants whether they froze or not
- Plant warm season vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant, melons and the like
- Begin planting tender trees and shrubs such as bougainvillea, hibiscus, lantana, natal plum
- apply pre emergent herbicides and control existing weeds as they sprout and while they are small
- be sure roses and deciduous fruit trees are pruned asap as they are budding out rapidly
- fertilize citrus and subtropical plants and trees- really just about everything in your garden or landscape can be fertilized now
- plant containerized rose bushes and fruit trees
- plant citrus
- be on the look for aphids and other pests on your tender new growth of vegetables and rose bushes
- just get out there and plant something- I’m running out of room for the list!!!!!
