If you planted a winter lawn a few weeks ago, you should have mowed at least once by now. It is important to fertilize and keep the cool season lawn growing fast and a deep green color while soil temperatures remain favorable. We will eventually get some cold weather and when we do, fertilizers become pretty ineffective and the grass can get yellow. They will have a hard time greening up again until warmer temps return. The best way to avoid a yellow winter lawn is to keep the nitrogen level up by applying a fertilizer specifically designed for cool temps. Turf Royale or all seasons (21-7-`14) formulation which use ammonium “nitrate” as the source of the nitrogen works very well in cooler temps. We recommend you apply after the first or second mowing and every 4-6 weeks after-Your neighbors will be “green” with envy!
