Get Ready To Plant! July is nearly over and yes it is still hot, but there are certain things that if you’re going to be successful this fall, you need to start doing now. Soil preparation is the key. Many folks think that once you’ve done it you’re good to go season after season. Do you remember what the soil looked like when you were done prepping it last time? Dark brown to black in color, moist, and without clods. I’d bet a steak dinner it doesn’t look like that now. Start by adding plenty of organic compost. Make your own or use OMNI and use plenty we recommend 6 bags per 100 square feet. Add gypsum or sulfur and some organic fertilizer or fertilome start and grow. Be sure to follow instructions on coverage. Once you’ve tilled these materials in to at least 8 inches, removed any clods, rocks, etc. you’re good to go. It should look as i previously described. It doesn’t hurt to re till and water and repeat a couple of times before you plant! You can find this recipe and a schedule of planting dates on our website(www.harpersnurseries.com) or FREE in the store.

. We have been receiving reports about caterpillars on Bougainvilleas of all things! Whether they are on Bougies or Grape Vines,Passion Vine, etc. Thuricide or Spinosad are the most effective and safest.
. Control Weeds while they are young. Spurge in really growing fast and furious now. Use Weed Out plus Q and to be sure it doesn’t come back “Dimension” as a pre emergent. Dimension keeps the seeds from being able to regrow and will give you control for 3-6 months.
. Keep lawns fertilized every 30 days. Fertilome lawn food plus iron works great this time of year!
. Now is the best time to convert from grass to a Xeriscape type landscape. The Bermuda grass lawns are easier to kill now than any other time of the year. If you’re considering a “conversion” or any landscape project, give Jerry Harper a call to set up an appointment for a FREE evaluation of your landscape. You can reach Jerry at 602 659 5994.
Continue hot weather treatments to trees and shrubs: wrap or paint young tree trunks, and add mulch to planter beds, roses, and fruit trees.
. Trim and plant or transplant palms now. This is the best time of year!
