Is Your Landscape Hot or Is The Heat Taking It’s Toll?
Be Cool and Hang by the Pool!
This time of year is when we tend to see the worst of what our landscape can be. Is that the case at your home?
Here are some suggestions for getting thru the next couple of months:
Perhaps you need to evaluate your plant selection and placement? If the same plants perform poorly every summer in the same place-there is a good chance it is the wrong plant for that spot. This would be a good time to think about replacing it with something that would perform better. Especially it it is a key area or focal point in your landscape! Drive around or go to the nursery and see what looks good nowIf it looks good in the nursery, living in a black plastic pot at 110, chances are it will perform fabulously in your garden.
Water properly-most folks still don’t water long enough to get the plant watered thoroughly enough to get it to the next watering-think hours, not minutes and check out the link above on how to water correctly!
Check your system-is the time and date correct, are the heads or nozzles working right, is water going where it should be and only there? Most of us run our systems when we don’t see them. Turn it on manually and walk around and look-besides it is a good excuse to “run through the sprinklers” like you did when you were a kid!
Mulch-adding a layer of compost, bark,or other organic material around and under your plants will take a lot of stress off of their over taxed root system!
Fertilize-not sure where the “rumor” that it is “too hot to fertilize” got started. Probably cause back in the day we used so much Ammonium Sulfate as a fertilizer and it releases so fast people “burned” lots of plants with it in the day. Use a good slow or time release fertilizer during the growing season which is now! Plant are growing when it is warm and the days are long. We are also watering a lot and leaching out the nutrients. Replace them with fertilome or organo type fertilizers!
