Okay, maybe not, but it’s Winter to us! Your pond water temps should definitely be below 60 degrees by now, which means NO MORE FEEDING YOUR FISH high-protein commercial fish food. We don’t care how much they beg! You can always give them things like zucchini, melon, lettuce, oranges, and even Cheerios.
Also, stop thinning and trimming your aquatic plants as they go dormant. This gardening activity will resume after the last danger of frost has passed us by — typically in late February.
At this time of year, when the aquatic plants are dormant, algae may rear its ugly head. It’s the price we pay for not freezing over. You can handle this issue in a couple of different ways:
Leave it alone and make it one less thing you have to do this Holiday season (it’s actually good for the aquatic life in your pond like frogs and toads);
Hand-weed it out, using it for compost around other plants like roses, as it’s very high in nutrients; or
Treat it with SAB (String Algae Buster) or Ecoblast,
Perhaps it’s time to redo the look around your pond. Harper’s landscape team can partner with The Pond Gnome and create or recreate the look and feel you want from your water feature and entire outdoor living area!
