Nothing is more frustrating to a gardener than to go out and get ready to pick that first ripe peach,fig,plum…..and as you reach up to pull it down you notice the back side of it is missing! Sheeesh, how do they know just the one that you’ve had your eye on for a couple of days just waiting for the perfect moment? Our summer fruit season has been in full swing for a few weeks now and i’ve missed my share of figs and plums for sure. There are a couple of things you can do: 1-pick fruit a bit early and let ripen in a paper bag or on newspaper on the patio or kitchen counter. 2-Adorn your tree with all kinds and any shiny object you can find (dvds, foil, tin plates….).3-Cover your tree or garden with bird netting. Create a “plant prison” as Rosie would say. We’ve found that this is really the only way, besides picking fruit early that works long term. The “scarecrow” techniques work for a day or two. Birds aren’t that dumb and they can figure out the shiny stuff or the fake Owl is just that!
