According to the Arizona Republic, in 1920 when Phoenix was only 5 square miles in size, the were 100,000 trees planted here. In the 1880s they reported visitors would claim ” you couldn’t see the town because of all the trees”. Do you suppose they knew something? Well we know they didn’t have air conditioning and the 1880s probably not even electricity in most cases. So to keep cool and comfortable, they planted trees. We now have a/c and fans, and pools to keep us cool, but it can cost a lot of money. SRP and APS both report the most cost effective thing you can do to save on electric bills is to create SHADE. One of the most cost effective and certainly the “GREENEST” thing you can do to create shade is to plant trees, vines, and shrubs in the proper places around your home. Harper’s can help you decide which are the best and most effective to plant and where to plant them, we’ll even plant them for you! Give us a call today for a FREE evaluation of your landscape-new or existing. Whether you need one tree or a complete landscape design we can help you start saving money on your utility bills right away! Remember the best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago, the 2nd best time is today!
Well the monsoon has arrived, complete with one of the biggest dust storms ever. What does that mean for your garden?
We are starting to see “slime mold” and other fungi especially in lawns. Be sure to water in the am note at night, apply dispersul, and don’t go too long between mowings, also dethatching might help as fungi like to grow in old organic matter and removing some might help.
Mulching-apply a layer of organic mulch around gardens, roses, fruit trees, really everything will benefit from cooler roots, more consistent moisture, and less weeds. It also looks and smells great!
Believe it or not, start preparing gardens for fall planting. Some varieties can be planted soon, in fact you can begin planting pumpkins now! Use lots of compost and gypsum! You can get our garden preparation guide free in store or on line at www.harpersnurseries.com
Be sure your trees are well staked, if they need staking at all. Trees should be double staked and there should be space between the trunk and the stakes!
Thin mesquites and other shade trees to allow for wind to pass through the canopy, preventing blow down and breaking.
All in all your plants will look and do better now with the influx of moisture in the air. You may even want to adjust watering frequency as things will not dry out as fast as in May or June.
