Driving around town the last week or so it is very apparent that we use a lot of frost sensitive plant material in our landscape, my own home included. The last few years have made the appearance of the “winter” landscape a bit tough. In a lot of cases, bougainvillea and lantana as good examples, they can usually stand a hard pruning and they respond rapidly-returning to their good look and nice blooms in a few weeks. In other cases, however; Ficus and pigmy palms being the best examples, new growth may return but slowly and what was once a tree is now perhaps a big bush! Another rub is that this is the time of year we’d like to be enjoying our landscape, not deciding when it is safe to prune back and whether or not it will come back at all.
