We’ve been hearing a lot about the drought in California and other areas of the country, we are basically always in a drought so to speak here in the desert areas of Arizona. We also hear a lot of ideas on how to save water-some are drastic means others make common sense. In general, however, you don’t seem to hear what the Harper Boys would call a lot of common sense easy to apply ideas or tips on water saving, so here goes:
If you have a lawn-don’t mow it quite as short-leaving the lawn a little longer will keep it from drying out so fast.
Replace old lawn sprinkler heads with new low impact efficient ones.
Make sure your heads are tight and not leaking around the base.
Obviously be sure water is not over spraying to areas that don’t need water.
Check for leaks or plug drip lines that are not needed.
Water in very early morning hours when wind and evaporation are low
Replace old sprinkler timers with new ones that are much more flexible and can allow you to water (especially in the winter) only when necessary-We find that almost everyone over waters drastically in the winter!! Also be sure to adjust your water schedule with seasons and turn off systems when it rains!
Mulch-applying a layer of organic material around trees, shrubs, gardens, and flower beds will allow the plants to use moisture more efficiently and keeps soil from drying out as fast
Replace dead, dying, or struggling plants-don’t try and grow plants that don’t belong here, and or keep vegetables alive in the off season-most of the time that is unproductive and it certainly isn’t worth the water. Summer is a great time to evaluate plants that may or may not be working-perhaps they’re just in the wrong place, but remove them now and quit wasting water on a plant that isn’t adding any value to your landscape-The Harper Boys would be glad to recommend the right plant for the right place for you!
Look for leaky valves, hose bibs or any where else that seems to be staying wet. If it’s wet now it’s probably leaking!
Hopefully this helps and you can probably think of some other ways-let us know your ideas The Harper Boys would love to share!!
